Cleaning Rolling Stock

About 142,000 square metres of trains are covered in graffiti every year, which equals 20 football fields. This costs Dutch Railways millions of euros. How does it work

By applying a thin layer of coating to rolling stock, a protective layer is created. This makes it more difficult for the paint to be absorbed and minimises the effort and time required to clean rolling stock. How to use

In general, cleaning rolling stock is not difficult. To make rolling stock cleaning as easy as possible, the coating should be applied as described below:

• Apply the coating with a clean microfibre cloth or melanin sponge.
• The surface should be clean, dry and dust-free.
• Apply a thin layer.
• The time it takes to dry depends on temperature, layer thickness and environment. After approximately 20 minutes the coating is dust-dry, after approximately 120 minutes the coating is surface-dry and after approximately 12 hours the coating is cured.

Graffiti costs millions of euros every year

Especially in places where trains remain stationary for long periods, such as sidings and marshalling yards, graffiti is sprayed on the trains.

For instance, at the NS, 142,000 square metres of graffiti is sprayed on trains every year. By using special fences, drones and all kinds of heat sensors it becomes more difficult for vandals to get near rolling stock. However prevention often fails and vandals manage to make their way onto trains.

Cleaning graffiti from rolling stock is a time-consuming job, where the graffiti often cannot be completely removed. By applying a protective layer of Exterior Coating to the object, it is protected from permanent damage caused by graffiti. Cleaning rolling stock now takes little time and effort; the surface is clean in the blink of an eye.
